What is melatonin?

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain that helps the body regulate its circadian rhythms – the 24-hour cycle of sleep-and-wake time that makes up a day.

The body produces melatonin in response to darkness, giving the signal to wind down for sleep. Typically, melatonin production tends to begin to rise about two hours before falling asleep, optimising the body’s systems for sleep.

What are over-the-counter melatonin supplements?

Occasionally derived from animal hormones or microorganisms but most commonly made synthetically, over-the-counter melatonin supplements are available to support treatment of the above listed conditions associated with sleep.

Should I take over-the-counter melatonin?

As with any supplement, you should consult a health professional regarding the suitability of over-the-counter melatonin products to ensure it will not interact with any other prescribed medication or treatment.
