Having an upset stomach is never fun. Our gut holds the key to many other elements of our health so ensuring your tummy is working correctly is important.
If you are experiencing discomfort in your stomach, it’s worthwhile getting a test to rule out possible causes, and understand whether it might be irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
What is irritable bowel syndrome?
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition that affects the colon (large bowel). IBS is common in Australia, and affects around one in five people.
IBS is different from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes chronic health conditions such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Some of the key symptoms of IBS include:
abdominal pain or discomfort
stomach bloating
chronic diarrhoea
constipation
excessive gas
nausea after eating
IBS can start after an infection, such as gastroenteritis or ‘gastro’, a period of increased stress, or a medicine.
How we can help
InstantScripts is Australia’s leading online health clinic. We offer an IBS test to investigate causes of irritable bowel symptoms and rule out other possible causes of an upset stomach such as coeliac disease.
The test involves a full blood count and is issued by one of our Australian-registered doctors. If it is approved by one of our doctors, the pathology form will be emailed to you. You then take this to your nearest pathology collection centre.
Once we receive the results, usually within a few days, we will email them to you. If there is anything abnormal, we will contact you for a follow-up consultation to walk you through the results and help identify recommended treatments. If you receive an abnormal result, you should also see your doctor.
Complete a digital consultation form. If approved by one of our doctors, a pathology form will be sent to you via phone or email.
STEP 2
Take your pathology form to a collection clinic near you.
STEP 3
After your test, your results will be available in our app or via email within 3-7 business days.
What our IBS test screens for
IBS is usually diagnosed by way of exclusion. So, we test for a range of possible causes of your tummy troubles so we can rule them out. This includes:
Full blood count: Used to exclude other gut conditions like coeliac disease.
Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR): Used to test for inflammation or infection in your body.
The C-reactive protein (CRP): A blood test that checks for infection or inflammation in the body.
Antigliadin antibodies (AGA): Used to measure your ability to digest gluten.
Tissue transglutaminase test (TTG): A serological test used for screening and detecting celiac disease and a related skin disorder dermatitis herpetiformis.
