The importance of blood tests
for vegans

With around 2.5 millions Australians switching to a plant-based diet, Aussies are becoming more conscious of the food they eat and its impact on their bodies and the environment.

But a plant-based diet requires a little extra care to ensure that you’re getting all the vitamins and minerals you need to stay happy and healthy. By getting a regular blood test, you can keep your diet on track, and identify any deficiencies that you may have.

So get a full nutrition blood test today to make sure your diet is balanced and complete!

How often should vegans get a blood test?

How often you get a blood test will vary depending on many factors, including your age and general health, so it’s best to work this out with your doctor.

It’s highly recommended that you get a blood test before switching to a plant-based diet. This will allow you to get a baseline for all future blood tests. After making the switch, you will likely need another blood test between three and six months later to see how you’re tracking.

We recommend that all vegans get their blood tested at least once a year.

Recommended blood tests for vegans

Below is our list of recommended blood tests for vegans. Simply fill out a digital consultation and select the blood tests you need:

Full blood count

This will look at your white and red blood cell count, as well as platelets. A full blood count can show whether you are displaying signs of anaemia or infection, and can track your nutritional status.

Iron studies

An iron study can help you determine if you have too little or too much iron in your system. A diet rich in wholegrains, legumes, nuts, seeds, dried fruits and green leafy vegetables should provide an adequate iron intake.

Folate levels

A folate test measures the amount of folic acid in the blood. Folic acid is Vitamin B9, which is vital to the production of healthy red blood cells. Folate can be found in foods such as green vegetables, fruit, dry beans and peas.

Calcium, Magnesium and Phosphate

These three minerals are vital to many processes in the body, including regulating muscle and nerve function, blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and the development, maintenance and repair of muscles, bones and teeth.

Vitamin B12

A B12 deficiency can cause serious health problems such as nerve damage. There are no plant-based sources of B12, so it’s highly recommended that you take B12 supplements and get a regular blood test.

Vitamin D

Vital to the growth and health of your bones, and the absorption of minerals such as calcium, phosphate and magnesium, your body gets Vitamin D from sunlight, as well as certain food sources.
